Petzl is a French company which produces, amongst other things, head torches and climbing hardware. They invented the very first head torch in 1972 and since then have gone on to produce some of the finest head torches on the market.

Currently, they produce several different ranges of head torches. The first is the Petzl Tikka Series, which were designed to offer a decent amount of light in a compact, lightweight body. The Petzl Tikka XP is the best in the series, with a single high-power LED and an adjustable filter to switch between a wide or focused beam quickly and easily. It produces sufficient light to easily illuminate a path whilst night walking, for example. The Petzl Tikka Plus has 4 standard LED’s designed to produce a decent amount of light for more close up jobs, like pitching a tent or reading a map in the dark. Also available is the Petzl Zipka Plus, which has all the same features of the Petzl Tikka Plus but with a retractable nylon cord instead of an elastic strap, so it can be worn around the wrist or strapped to a fence post. The Petzl Tikkina has 2 standard power LED’s, perfect as a back-up light and like all the headlamps in the Tikka range is water resistant too.

Next is the Petzl Myo Series, which is aimed at more serious applications. The Petzl Myo XP has a single, super high output LED and an adjustable wide angle filter. It produces a huge amount of light, making it suitable for uses like cycling and trail running. Also available is the Petzl Myo XP Belt, which is the same as the standard Petzl Myo XP, but with the battery back on a long cable instead of on the back of the head. This reduces the amount of weight that has to be worn on the head and, by keeping the battery pack in a warm pocket, increases the battery life if being used in very cold conditions. The new Petzl Myo RXP is a more powerful version of the Petzl Myo XP, and gives the user the choice of 10 different lighting levels from 8 to 140 lumens. It also regulates the power, so while regular head torches dim as the batteries wear down, the Petzl Myo RXP maintains maximum brightness for a much longer period of time. There is also the Petzl Myolite, Petzl Myolite 3, Petzl Myo 3 and Petzl Myo Belt SB 5, which have a single high power Halogen bulb instead of an LED, and may also have 3 or 5 additional LED’s to provide low level lighting for close up work.

Finally, Petzl make the e+LITE head torch, was is designed as an ultra compact back-up head torch, capable of being stored for up 10 years before the batteries begin to degrade. It has 3 standard LED’s and 1 red LED to provide various lighting/signalling options.
